Has anyone got 100 points in the Premier League?

The Premier League is an incredibly competitive competition, featuring the very best teams England has. Winning the league is an incredible achievement, but has anybody ever hit triple figures with their league tally?

Has anyone got 100 points in the Premier League? Yes, Manchester City are the only team to get 100 points in a Premier League season. This happened in 2017-18 when Manchester City finished on exactly 100 points.

100 points is an incredible achievement considering that teams can only collect a maximum of 114 points if they win every game of the season. 114 points is never going to happen in the Premier League as it is just too competitive, with the league continually showing that any team can beat anyone on their day.

It is why Manchester City are the only team to ever reach the 100-point mark in a Premier League campaign. Liverpool came closest to repeating that feat when they won their first Premier League title in 2019-20, finishing just one point short of the century. This achievement from City is why the 2017-18 team is known as The Centurions.

Manchester City 2017-18 season

Heading into the 2017-18 season, Manchester City were coming off the back of a pretty disappointing campaign by their high standards. City finished third in the league and had some disappointing early exits in the League Cup and Champions League.

Having spent more than £210 million on transfers in the summer, City were certainly able to rebound from their poor performance the previous year. In the league, City began with one of the best runs in Premier League history. They were undefeated in their first 22 games, winning 18 straight Premier League games between August and December.

These performances earnt Pep Guardiola four straight Manager of the Month awards, becoming the first man in Premier League history to achieve this feat. This undefeated streak would not go on forever. Despite two goals in the last seven minutes, City’s first defeat of the season would come against Liverpool at Anfield, with the home side winning 4-3.

City would rebound with eight games undefeated before the Manchester derby. City had won the first encounter between the two sides 2-1 and took a 2-0 lead after just half an hour. But Manchester United fought back with an incredible comeback, winning the game 3-2 after a winner from Chris Smalling.

These would be City’s only two losses of the season in the Premier League. They had some brilliant results during that time as well. City dismantled Liverpool 5-0 in the fourth game of the season as well as big wins over Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool.

This season set multiple records in the Premier League. 32 wins was the new English top-flight record for the most wins in a single season, a record that they matched a year later despite finishing with two fewer points. 16 of those wins were away from home which was another record for the top flight of English football.

This Manchester City season set multiple records and it brought a lot of silverware to the Manchester City players and coach. Guardiola was Premier League Manager of the Season and there were five Manchester City players present in the PFA Team of the Year. Leroy Sane was PFA Young Player of the Year as well as Premier League Player of the Month in October.

Manchester City reaching 100 points in the 2017-18 season is one of the biggest Premier League accomplishments that we have ever seen and a feat that we will not see again for a long time.

Liverpool’s highest points in Premier League

Liverpool have a storied history in the Premier League despite only winning one Premier League title, along with 18 First Division titles. In the Premier League, their highest-ever points tally came in the 2019-20 season, the same year that they won their first-ever Premier League title. They finished that season on 99 points.

Liverpool had not had a huge amount of success in the Premier League since the league’s creation in 1992. They had failed to win a title despite winning 18 First Division titles, winning the league in 1989-90 and finishing second on multiple occasions in the Premier League.

They started the season by winning the UEFA Super Cup having won the Champions League

earlier in 2019. Liverpool began the 2019-20 season with one of the best unbeaten runs in Premier League history, going undefeated in the first 27 games, winning 26 of those including easy wins over Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Two weeks before the season would be stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Liverpool finally lost their first game of the Premier League season on the 29th of February 2020, a 3-0 defeat to Watford.

Despite only winning six of their last eleven games of the season, Liverpool still finished as champions of the Premier League by eighteen points over second-place Manchester City. Liverpool were easily on course to break the 100-point barrier but fell just short after a poor run of form towards the end of the season.

This title-winning season would blow through multiple records, equalling the most wins in a row record that had been set by Manchester City two seasons prior. Liverpool sealed the title after just 31 games which was the earliest that the Premier League title had ever been sealed.

Most points without winning Premier League title

It is a record that no one really wants to hold, but Liverpool are the team who got the most points in a Premier League season without winning the title. This happened in the 2018-19 season when Liverpool managed to get a whopping 97 points, finishing just one point behind champions Manchester City.

Liverpool became the first team to get more than 90 points and win 30 or more Premier League games and fail to win the title. It was a heart-breaking finish for Liverpool as by this point they had not yet won the Premier League title. 97 points would have been enough to win the title in 24 of the previous 25 Premier League seasons.
