How many European trophies does Manchester United have?

Despite struggling to reach their high standards over the last decade, Manchester United are one of the biggest and most successful teams in the history of football. But exactly how successful are they?

How many European trophies does Manchester United have? Manchester United have six European Trophies. This includes three Champions League titles as well as one European Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Europa League and one European Super Cup.

Manchester United have certainly had their success In European football. It begins with the team winning three Champions League trophies. United also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991 and this meant that they got to play in the European Cup Winners’ Cup later that year.

When did Manchester United win the Champions League?

Manchester United have won the Champions League three times. The club’s first Champions League trophy came all the way back in 1968. This was only the 13th season of the European Cup and it was strictly a knockout competition at this time with no group stage. At this time you had to win four two-legged ties to get to the final.

Manchester United beat Hibernians 4-0 in the first round before a very close 2-1 victory over Sarajevo in the second round. United again won 2-1 in the Quarter-finals this time over Gornik Zabzre. United again scraped through the Semi-finals with a 4-3 victory over Real Madrid to send them to the final.

The final was originally quite a close affair as it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. But in extra time United put the game away brilliantly as they beat Benfica 4-1 thanks to two goals from Bobby Charlton and one each from George Best and 19-year-old Brian Kidd. This made Manchester United the first English team to win the European Cup.

It was an incredible title as a decade earlier, the squad was devastated by the Munich air disaster which claimed 23 lives including eight players. Sir Matt Busby was able to rebuild the team after he returned having recovered from his injuries sustained in the crash and led the team to a brilliant title.

It would be over 30 years before Manchester United would next claim a title. It did not seem likely that United would get far in the Champions League when they were put into a group with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Two wins and four draws was just barely enough for United to advance to the knockout stages.

United were drawn against Inter in the Quarter-finals which they beat 3-1 on aggregate mainly thanks to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in the first leg. Manchester United again won the tie at home when they beat Juventus 3-2 in the 2nd leg after a 1-1 draw. But the final looked like the end of the road.

United faced Bayern Munich who finished above them in the group stage as the team’s opponent in the final. Mario Basler gave the German side the lead in the sixth minute and it looked like this would be the winner. But in one of the best comebacks in football history, Teddy Sheringham scored in the 91st minute before super-sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winner in the 93rd minute to give United their second Champions League title.

When did Manchester United last win the Champions League?

Manchester United’s most recent Champions League win came in 2008. Unlike the previous title, United were drawn in an easier group, winning five out of the six games and drawing the other one.

In the Round of 16, United claimed a close 1-0 win on the road in the second leg to scrape past a talented Lyon side. The Quarter-finals were much more comfortable as United beat Roma 3-0 on aggregate, a team that they had beaten once already in the group stage. Their Semi-final display was an impressive one as they held Barcelona scoreless across two games to win 1-0 on aggregate.

It set up an all-English final between United and Chelsea. Cristiano Ronaldo gave United the lead in the 26th minute, but Frank Lampard evened the game up just before halftime. Neither team could score in the rest of the 90 minutes or through extra time, with Didier Drogba getting sent off in the 116th minute.

The game went to penalties and both teams scored their first two spot kicks. After scoring United’s opener, Ronaldo missed his penalty and gave Chelsea a massive opportunity to win. John Terry had the chance to win the game with his penalty, but slipped in his run-up and hit the post with his shot.

After two more successful penalties from United, Nicolas Anelka’s penalty was saved by United’s goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and it gave United their third Champions League title.
